Trends to watch in natural sweeteners

(NC)— Health conscious consumers are more informed than ever about the importance of making good choices when it comes to a balanced diet. Limiting salt, increasing fibre, and reducing added sugar are among concerns.

According to Hélène Charlebois, an Ottawa–based registered dietitian, cutting back on added sugar is a priority for many of her clients. “Diabetes, obesity and other weight–related health issues are on the rise,” says Charlebois. “My clients are looking for ways to cut back on daily calories without sacrificing taste. Natural sugar substitutes like stevia, which has zero calories and zero carbohydrates are especially appealing.”

Stevia

• A plant native to South America, has been used to sweeten foods for centuries

• 200–300 times sweeter than sugar

• Rebaudioside A (Reb–A) is a natural, purified extract that comes from the leaves of the stevia plant

• Shown to be safe for use in foods and beverages, and has shown no adverse affects for those with diabetes and hypertension

• Approved by Health Canada for use in natural health products (NHPs) such as vitamin enhanced waters and herbal products

• Can be used in cooking or baking

• Reb A is used in products like, Tropicana brand's Trop50 vitamin enhanced juice beverages, Aquafina Plus+ Vitamins 10 Cal vitamin enhanced waters and SoBe Lo Cal enhanced fruit flavoured beverage.
