Ask the Expert: The ABCs of a successful school day

(NC)—Getting your kids ready in the morning can be a challenge. Teachers will tell you and studies support: Kids do their best when they are well-rested and start the day with enough energy to last until lunchtime. Toronto-based teacher, Benedicte Wiggett, offers her tips on how to start the day right and make every school day a great one. Being well prepared is the first step to a great day at school and establishes good habits for the future. I like to ask parents to follow the ABCs:

A - Awake and Ready to Go

A good night's sleep is essential for kids to stay alert and energetic throughout the day. Create a bedtime routine and stick to it so your kids wake up every morning refreshed and ready to go. Also, set the alarm ten minutes earlier to give your family extra time for last-minute morning mishaps.

B - Begin with Breakfast

Start the day with a healthy breakfast. I can always point out the kids who didn't eat breakfast because they are less focused and often end up eating a more unhealthy lunch. Many of my students' parents use quick and wholesome breakfast options when they're in a rush, such as Carnation Breakfast Anytime. C - Conversation

Start a conversation with your children before school, whether it's over breakfast or on the way to school. Ask them about the day ahead or discuss upcoming family trips or projects. Chatting will not only get their inquisitive minds going, but will get them excited for the day ahead.

Parents want to set their kids up to get the most out of their day and their education. Follow these tips and get an A+ for your morning routine.

(NC)—With the cost of food on the rise, there's no better time to start growing your own organic herbs, fruits and vegetables. The best part about incorporating edible items into the garden (aside from the taste and health benefits) is that you don't need to be an avid gardener or have a large garden space to get started.

Herbs and vegetables can easily be grown right in your backyard garden or in containers on your patio or balcony. Certain items such as tomatoes come in a variety of vibrant colours and when mixed in with traditional flowers and plants, make for breathtaking displays.
