The moderating effects of this significant body of water allow the vineyard to ripen varieties such as Pinot Gris and Merlot on the northernmost reaches of grape production. In its monumental Atlas of Suitable Grape Growing Locations in the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys of British Columbia (1984) Agriculture Canada published the results of its extensive analysis of Okanagan Valley microclimates and soils in the form of detailed maps. The maps rate important environmental factors such as solar radiation and hours of sunshine during the growing season, the risk of autumn frost, as well as soil character and conditions.
