Shake up your kids' breakfast routine
Shake up your kids' breakfast routine

(NC)—A wholesome, nutritious breakfast provides fuel for children's bodies, kick starts the day and keeps it going until lunchtime. But between getting ready for work and packing the kids' lunch boxes, parents sometimes struggle to prepare a full breakfast every morning. A nutritious breakfast needs to be high on the morning priority list. Clinical evidence shows kids and adolescents who consume a healthy breakfast have better academic performance and attentiveness, improved cognition skills, a reduced risk of becoming overweight or obese, and have more healthful diet habits and better diet quality.

Why not try a fast and delicious breakfast solution kids will love – smoothies. They are an easy solution during the morning rush and curb mid-morning hunger pangs. Plus, they require minimal clean up, and are easy to take on the go.

“The key to a good smoothie is to make sure you have a balance of nutrients, so include some fresh or frozen fruit for vitamins, as well as a good source of protein,” says Toronto-based dietitian Naomi Orzech. “For children protein is important to help muscle grow and to keep skin, hair and nails healthy, as well as providing energy and a feeling of fullness.”

Here is a delicious, healthy and easy recipe to try tomorrow morning:

Very Berry Breakfast Shake (makes 2 servings)

In a blender combine:

• 1 ripe banana

• 1/2 cup fresh strawberries

• 1 cup skim milk

• 1 sachet Strawberry Carnation Breakfast Anytime

Cover and blend until smooth. Pour into two glasses or travel mugs to take them on the go. Serve immediately.

Herbs and vegetables can easily be grown right in your backyard garden or in containers on your patio or balcony. Certain items such as tomatoes come in a variety of vibrant colours and when mixed in with traditional flowers and plants, make for breathtaking displays.
