Cereal can provide important nutrition

(NC)—According to a survey recently conducted by Kellogg, as many as nine out of 10 Canadian moms agree that breakfast cereal plays a role in setting the foundation for a long-term healthy diet for their children.

Nutritionists also tend to agree that eating breakfast can help start your child's day off right, and children's cereal can help keep the mornings simple. Not only will cereal help to jump-start your nutritional intake, it is also a meal the whole family will enjoy without breaking the bank.

Scientific research also shows that the essential nutrients missed at breakfast are not likely to be recouped at other meals during the day. So breakfast is important, but so is the food you and your family eat. Additional research data reveals:

No resistance: Children love cereal so be sure to have a variety on-hand with favourites like Kellogg's Rice Krispies,Mini-Wheats or Corn Pops cereals.

Nutrients trump sugar: 75 per cent of survey participants say they are okay giving their children something with a little sugar as long as the food is packed with nutrients. It is one way to be sure children eat what is served. The percentage of sugar consumed from cereal is actually small. According to research, sugar in ready-to-eat cereal – including kids' cereals – contributes, on average, less than 5 percent of daily sugar intake, yet it adds taste, texture and enjoyment that encourage the consumption of important nutrients. In addition, cereal is a typically low-fat, nutrient-dense food with many essential vitamins and minerals.

Healthier body weight: According to a study in a leading scientific journal, regular cereal eaters, including children, tend to have lower body mass indices (BMI) and are less likely to be overweight than those who eat cereal less frequently.
