Have you ever compared two pieces of fruit, one organic and one from a conventional farm? If so, you probably found that the same type of fruit can taste dramatically different depending on its origins. How can this be? It's time to start asking the question: who controls our food?

The one who controls the food controls the people. We hear promises of increased yields, decreased pests, more nutritious and less expensive food, yet we see increased pests and disease and decreased yields, not to mention the chemicals that we unknowingly ingest.

Dr. Malcolm Devine, a food scientist with Aventis, claims that when a chemical toxin used to kill insects is spliced with a corn seed, the corn plant that grows from that seed is not toxic to humans. How can this be? The processing almost certainly destroys the toxin, he explains. Almost certainly? The fact is that they do not know for sure. And logically speaking, how does food become more nutritious after a pesticide gene becomes part of its structure? As far as the amount of research put into these scientific experiments, it’s interesting to note that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency regulations require that safety studies be supplied by the manufacturer themselves and that no independent or long term tests need to be carried out.

The reasons behind genetically modified foods may seem logical, but why are these foods not labeled? Sixty to seventy percent of the food in your local grocery store is a genetically modified product (GMO), yet the general population is unaware of this. In Europe and in Africa, GMO foods are labeled because the people demanded to know what they were eating.

When we hear about chemical companies who want to help farmers by supplying better, more broad-spectrum herbicides and pesticides, we ought to stop and consider their motivations. Who do you really think they are promoting these products for? The farmer? No. The consumer? Not likely. Themselves and their shareholders? You bet! The short-sightedness of these multinational corporations is based on greed, profit and quite possibly ultimate control of the foods we eat.

Where a chemical company sees a weed as competition for their crops, a biodynamic farmer sees the weed as a sign of nutrient deficient soil. The weed actually brings minerals and fixes certain nutrients, says scientist Dave Hudson. The weeds are necessary so that the soil can remain strong and vital with life. Unfortunately, the people behind the multinational companies that promote the wonders of the newly invented foods have probably never had a relationship with any plot of dirt for any length of time. If they had, they'd learn how the cycles and ecology of nature and plant growth work over the seasons and years.

As a society we need to do some collective revisions to some of our old food habits. Doing so will directly affect the level of control that chemical companies have over our food supply. We need to buy real, whole foods from local shops that support sustainable agriculture and organic/biodynamic farming methods.

The next time you put food or a supplement in your body with the goal of improving your health, ask if what you're ingesting fits into a natural cycle of creation within the food chain. If you find it doesn't, consider whether it will fit into the natural cycles of your own body. The closer we stay to nature and its cycles, the closer we are to attaining balance and abundance for the entire planet. Genetically modifying the food that we eat and the food that we feed our children takes us farther and farther away from the truth. Adding chemicals to our food and allowing multinational corporations to decide what goes on our dinner plates will only lead us down a path where our health and the health of our planet are compromised. There is no better time than now to educate and empower yourself. Start asking the right questions. Who controls your food?
